You Can’t Heal In The Environment That Made You Sick

You can’t heal in the environment that made you sick.

When it comes to improving health, you have to change the environment you’re living in… this goes for any type of health - physical, mental, emotional, spiritual or relational health.

This doesn’t necessarily mean to have to literally leave the environment (although sometimes it does), but you do have to change the environment you’re living in.

Very often, when I first start working with clients, they hire me thinking I’ll have the secret to how they can maintain their current lifestyle, yet improve their well-being.

Here’s a secret…

For things to change, things have to change.

Our environment is composed of where we live, the food we have available to eat, our work/life balance, what media we consume, the people we surround ourselves with, to how we move our bodies, to our inner dialogue, and more…

We may not have the luxury of having absolute control over every single aspect of our lives, but we do have the authority to make decisions about what we allow in our bodies, and what we give our time & attention to.

Here are some tips on how to improve your environment for optimal health:

1. Look at your circle of influence. Find people who inspire you & challenge you to grow… people who live the life you’re wanting to create. We take on habits & behaviors of those around us, so make sure their habits & behaviors are in alignment with where you’re going… not where you’ve been.

2. Unfollow social media l/news accounts that make you feel bad about yourself, or disturb your peace. Replace them with accounts that inspire you & represent who you want to be. Your mind is like a glass of water… continuously pour muddy water in there, and it’ll stay muddy… pour clean, clear water in there & it will eventually wash out all of the old, muddy thoughts that used to cloud your mind.

3. Set boundaries. You are the authority as to who gets access to you & how much… this includes your kids, your family members, your coworkers, and more. If it’s time to clock out - clock out. It is your job to uphold your boundaries, not theirs. Every minute of your life is not meant to be filled with other people’s stuff… if it is, you’re not living your life… you’re living theirs. You deserve to live YOUR life just as much as they deserve to live theirs.

4. Set yourself up for success. Create an environment full of what you need to feel healthy. Make it easy to access the healthy stuff, and make the unhealthy stuff a little bit harder to access. For example, keep fruit & veggies out in the open & at the front of your fridge, and keep unhealthy food hidden in cabinets… when you go to get something to eat make the first thing you see be what your best, healthiest self would choose… then choose that first. If you still want the other stuff afterwards, go for it, but you’ll likely eat less.

We are not victims to our circumstances. Every decision we make can take us closer to who we want to be, or further from it. It is your responsibility to make your healing a priority, no one else. Take authority over your life, and create an environment where you’re allowed to flourish… only then can you show up as your best self for others too.
